What a soap opera. Yes, this is a classic, by one of Great Britains greatest British authors.

There was a time, before iPods, Walkmans, TV, radio, record players, in which workers (usually women) that were assigned to long hours of menial labor would assign one amongst them to read a book to the rest. The Return of the Native, Thomas Hardy's sixth novel, would be a terrific choice for such a reading group.

"The Return of the Native" is perhaps my favorite novel. The passionate Eustacia Vye is perhaps my favorite female character in literature: not because she's ethically flawless but because she's painted by Hardy in such a stunningly beautiful way.
