I found The Last Ember to be rapidly paced and expertly crafted despite the obvious mountains of research Levin brought to the story. I was actually inspired, while reading, to do some independent research into the history of Flavius Josephus and also the author, himself.

I am not an avid reader of crime suspense fiction or techno-thrillers, and I felt that the Da Vinci Code industry is "history lite". This is not to say that I don't like who-dunnits with an historical angle.

It is a historical fiction that is set in Jerusalem and Rome. The author obviously has more than a working knowledge of antiquities and presents historical revisionism in a manner that makes the readers pontificate on the topic long after they have finished the book.
